Lerato is a Sesotho name meaning love. The painting Lerato is about a lady wearing a doek for empowerment, she is reclaiming her identity as an African and to challenge societal beauty standards that favour Eurocentric features. She is also wearing a doek to connect to her African heritage and to embrace traditional clothing and customs. Lerato finds pride and identity when she is wearing doek and she feels the love of her ancestors when is dressed traditionally.
