Letsogo la mme (In my mothers hands)
Year: 2022
Size: 1800 x 60 cm
Medium: Oxide on paper clay
This piece, inspired by the experiences of female waste pickers, depicts a mother holding a child, symbolizing the sacrifices women make to provide for their families. The hunched posture, slightly off balance, reflects both the burden and protective instincts of motherhood. The wavy lines of the dress, ill-fitting yet essential, echo the dual role of shielding both mother and child. Though headless, the figure’s forward-leaning neck suggests focus and dedication. Divided into uneven sections yet grounded on a solid base, the sculpture conveys resilience amidst imbalance. The glaze, with its dusty and grimy hues, evokes the environment of the dumpsite while highlighting the mother’s strength and care in shielding her child from its harshness.
